If you ever wonder what an astrolab or a celestial globe looks like or trying to fathom the significance of the Samarkand Observatory to today's world of science, wonder no more as all these will be brought to you. The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) has taken the initiative to bring 150 items created by Muslim intellectuals in the height of the Islamic civilisation to the Malaysian shore. It will be presented to the public in the form of an exhibition to highlight the preeminance of science in the Islamic civilisation, to be held from Jan 8 till March 31, 2007. The exhibition is the first of its kind, not only in Malaysia but also in Asia and it is hoped to motivate young Malaysians to be interested not only in science and technology but also in empowerment and acquiring knowledge. The first stage of the exhibition will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on Jan 8 till 14 and will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. The exhibition will later be moved to the National Science Centre to enable more people to take a peek at the scientific creations. The exhibition will be on going from Jan 23 till March 31. The exhibition will feature replicas, working models, models and a collection of posters of creations by Muslim intellectuals as well as manuscripts on various scientific fields. The exhibition is divided to four divisions - World of Astronomy, Geography and Navigation, Creations and Medical Discoveries, Mathematics, Arts and Architecture as well as Creations and Technology. A multimedia presentation has been developed by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDec) to provide a better storyline on each areas of science that is on display as additional information to the patrons. The idea of having such an exhibition came from Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis following a visit to the Institute for the History of Arabic-Islamic Science, Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany. Disscussions between the Minister and director and founder of the Institute Prof Dr Fuat Sezgin resulted in his readiness to assist MOSTI to host the exhibition. |
