Assalamualaikum Wbt… and a very good day!

My question is what makes you interested in english?Other than it is another lingua-franca we speak everyday, what else makes you think that it is important to learn english?

Here are my opinion:
-When i'm able to speak fluently in english, the level of confidence raise as I'm meeting alot of people. When they have the confidence, everything we discuss will be smooth without any interference.

So forumers?Any idea? And do correct me if i'm wrong..

As an online gamers that plays in an European server mostly, english is vital when it comes to making friends and commmunicate. I find myself quite ok when it comes to text chatting, but when i have to use ventrilo or teamspeak (both a voice chatting software) i felt awkward. I can't talk as smoothly as i type. So improving my english in one way or another will raise my confidence when communicating with people..

Assalamualaikum ....
Actually, i wonder if i'm actually interested in English language. I think, the fact that it is a lingua franca of the world today; by which makes my life seem to be greatly affected, forces me to be able to know, write and speak the language.
So ok ... Why Cik Bedah is interested in English ? I am interested because i need it biggrin.gif

This is a little off-topic ... i hope sweetie Hmir wont mind biggrin.gif

I cannot help but to respond to Lipas's answer/opinion on the topic. I smiled ear to ear and felt at peace reading his/her response. In fact, i actually felt like i was reading a transcript of an answer by a Miss Universe top 3 finalist biggrin.gif .. or maybe someone who has such confidence to be in public , with a responsibility ... like... a diplomat.
Elegant answer.

Most people have similar difficulty speaking a language than writing in it. And vice versa.
So Lipas, i think in your situation, you could try practising speaking the language. If you already are.... here are some tips though ...

You already know the words, they're somewhere up there in your mind and are waiting for you to use them.
You already know how to structure the words into sentences correctly, and most of the time, they're already up there in your mind in the form of complete sentences.
So, speak calmly. Slowly. Pronounce the words clearly, each. Do not rush the words.
These (steps) will help your articulation.

Do not accent your pronunciations (like most people do today.. dhuhhh..).
Do not stress the letter R (like Americans and like most KL people do!!).

These will further help your articulation because accents and stressing the letter R (when accents & stressed-R are not native to your tongue) WILL BE an added block of difficulty to your speaking the English language. Your mind will spend more time processing these two "craps" ...(hihihi sorry...but i mean it).

Later on, when you are already comfortable and familiar yourself with your own tempo & articulation, your speaking speed will naturally vary accordingly and most importantly, sound natural. Your accent and pronunciations will also be natural and effortless.
If there is a part of you that is accent-maniac (that you had to hide during practising these steps), you can now let it out and by all means , knock yourself out honey!! ...

Just some tips smile.gif We're all learning ...

I never have interest in learning English Language, and I hate English subject (as well as any other subject that comes with the word "Bahasa" or "Language") since I was a school boy. Why? Because it is boring and I know I can deliver messages better in Malay Language (again, that doesn't mean I enjoy the Malay Language subject in school or anywhere else )

But still why do I care about English language? Because this is 21st century and it is part of my job requirements...... well, that sums up everything =)
unexistance
I think what makes me learn English is the TV series / movies running everyday (since as far as I can remember),
in addition to my interest in SciFi,
so I mainly learn English through that (hear the pronunciation, look up the meaning in the subtitles).

The downside, I'm greatly influenced by American-English (we are supposedly British-English)

p/s: couldn't care less though, as long as I can understand what I'm watching/reading laugh.gif

when i was in primary school I hate english as my parents always compare me to my sister [she was really good in english and I was noob]

then in scondary school I started to love english.why?
because of te teachers!
great teachers can lead students to interestingness[this word really exist lol]

But after SPM I took the Japanese course.[Naruto infection]
And started on that day my english went down again.
Memorizing kanji everyday will make you unable to spell simple english word.[true lol]

Sometimes I feel like I've choosed the wrong path. But actually there's nothing to regret.

I love languages especially malay and english. wub.gif I also fond of Mandarin, korean and japanese. Arabic? I have learnt it 10 years ago but owing to lack of exposure to the language, I have forgotten how to use it. sleep.gif
Although there are many grammar rules on the usage of the words in each language make me miserable but they do not stop me from learning languages as saying goes no pain, no gain.hehe

Why do I learn English?
1) It is included in school syllabus
2) Almost everything connected to the English language (tv shows, magazines, technology)
3) It is compulsory to be fluent if I want to pass sucessfully in any interview which is conducted in English
4) It gives me confidence to talk with others(chinese, indians and foreigners)

Highly literate person will tend to speak or write using 'bombastic' words replacing the common words used in colloquy. To me, the ability in using languages effectively which can affect others is important in order to success especially if one wants to be a leader as a leader must be able to influence others to follow him.

p.s : as Malay aphorism says, 'keris lembing tiada tajam, tajam lagi lidah manusia', it vividly shows that it is important to us to speak and write politely! biggrin.gif

for the sake of watching english movies...really? ..really really!

p/s: not really... english is just another language i've learned in school ... biggrin.gif LOL

what do you mean by " it'll getting more intense when you mix it up " ?

It will be such humiliating when you mix up both american and GBr's english. Now that's what I mean..

My Dad really took a serious care of my education since I was young...
he said " If u dont grow up to be a human, then what would u wanna be?"..

So, when it was the time for me to go to school, he started buying me english exercise books and asked me to learn to love this langguage...and of course I couldn't do it.. For God sake, how could I do things that I dont even have interest to do ?.. and I sounded it to Dad, and he was a bit dissapointed..I knew how I've let him feel so low that moment..
(I'm sorry Dad, never meant to..)...
so then came my high school years...I moved on to Terengganu and settled there..(here, my shelter, my paradise..luv Tganu)
Beyond chance, one year, when I was in form 2, (that was years ago, now I'm 17..almost 18) I met this girl named L.... at a tuition center..
we talked, and be friends,.. She's a smart girl, brilliant, really breathtaking and her English was good too..
she's like an enzyme that increased my confidence and gave me inspiration to learn English which I've been hated for ages.. laugh.gif
so then I borrowed her essays and notes sometimes in order to improve my acchivement in Eng. subject..
Seeing my sudden interest in this langguage, Dad bought me my very first English novel;
Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix..
from then on, I set a new goal in my life , to get an excellent mark for Eng. subject and to love the langguage as well..
and it's all worthy, all of the hard work and effort that i made finally gave me an A for English in PMR..(first time ever I scorred an A for this subject) Alhamdulillah.. blush.gif

time after time, I kept improving my English and I think I gave my best for 1119 paper in SPM 2006..(God willing)

today this topic made me thinking,; "If I don't help myself to move up to another and higher level, who else would do?"
People around me can contribute support and give me inspiration that i needed in my life, but they can't help me climbing up the ladder if I don't make a move myself...

Thank you Allah, for giving me chance to be a human, and for choosing me to be a daughter to my supportive Dad..

rolleyes.gif

On a month in 2005, I went to Kuantan for an exhibition, and I made new friends there..most are from Selangor and Kl, and they have 'an English tongue',
then one of the Selangor boys said to me: "You're from Terengganu, and you speak English??"

whoever you are or from whereever you are, it doesnt matter..if you want to be successful, then go making it happens

I think this post is not only useful to Lipas, but to me as well..
I got a little bit problem when it comes to speaking thing , u know like "urr..what?, err, yeah of course..err.. and err."
ehehhe,
it takes me quite sometimes to speak clearly, and worst it makes people whom i spoke to having a question mark on their mind..
I'd take your notes,,and would practise it in my daily comunication..

Askm...and a very good day!

My question is what makes you interested in english?

Of course so that I can shower people with great happiness when I criticise and mock their hypocrisy. Like for example, this would be my reply to you:

What the heck is wrong with you? You'd dare put English in front of your religion's calling for peace?

Or is ASKM a new mazhab's way of greeting people? Which funky mazhab tells you type ASKM instead of ASSALAMUALAIKUM?

Is that really something too long for you to bother typing? Then don't bother typing altogether. Sheesh.

Learn to PRIORITIZE.

See? English is a beautiful, beautiful language.

Dear Mr.C-Fu,
your post to this topic starter is good when you asked him/her to type the 'Assalamualaikum' phrase with the right and appropriate spelling..thanks a lot to you..that was indeed a good action to do.
But maybe next time, u can have some decent in your post..so then people can accept the good thing you try to say...

I'm not really good in English..but I try..
I'm sorry if this post offends you.

alright...many of forumers here learned from movies....but,unfortunately it is american english.literally,m'sia is a country that speaks GB's english...

Mass media provide much oppurtunity for listening to English. Television especially is very helpful. Although mostly the tv programmes spoke American English, we cannot complain though for us do learn a lot from them. In fact, we can see how different spoken English can be in USA, England, Australia, Malaysia and other countries. Though it is basically English each speaks, the pronunciaciation accent and local flavour are plainly discernible.

Unfortunately, while we hear English being spoken via the television or radio, we cannot speak back. So, again the opportunity to speak English is limited. I supposed we have to live with the fact that the opportunities for listening and speaking English is limited. That does not mean that we should give up using English. I realise that English is a very important language in the world and it is definitely important that we become proficient in it. We all should be proficient in it because most of the important discoveries and advances in science, technology and other fields are available in English. So, if our command of English is lacking then we will lose out and always be left behind.

TV is not exactly very helpful. Just make an example out like this. When you're watching a movie with an English subtitle at the bottom, wouldn't it be just the same as you're reading a storybook? laugh.gif

Does watching TV helps you to communicate well with others? No, I don't think so. If you say, TV helps to "understand" the language, that perhaps would be acceptable. laugh.gif And, English is not limited in our country. English is everywhere. It is to ask ourselves whether we are up to the challenge to work and strive hard to be a good English communicator (if you want to be one!).

huhu..it's been a while since you guys replying for this topic..
hem..as for me..i never like or hated english..not even enjoying learning english that much..but we have to..for lots of reason...and i think the main reason would always be for communication..well we all know that speaking is one way to communicate, and communication is essential in our life..we communicate everyday..since i'm still studying and in few years more, i'll finish my study and will start moving into the real world of working...that's why i really need to improve my speaking, both in writing and speaking...i don't even know which accent i use when i talk with people..we might not even realize which accent we are using...haha..cikbedah..what do you mean by 'stressing the letter R'?i dont really get the point..
versanner
Because i like to know lot of languages....english is very important to learn other language...furthermore, english been spoken and used to communicate between people that have different background/race....knowing english means going outside the box, hence it is very important and that is the main reason why i like english very much
