Hey yall

Yes Hairulfadly. You are correct. You can say
Thanks or
Thank You to a singular(person) or plural(persons/people).

IMHO, on "thank" instead of "thank you" is used as spoken(Qulloquiol) only. It is more polite, I think when addressing the elderly, higher status person to use " I thank you for the pen you gave me".
Ainoitu is correct. When addressing elderly ones or those of higher status, you could use
"I thank you for the pen you gave me". What happens here is; you are addressing someone of a different status/age, so you are conversing to that person in his respect, respectfully and politely.
The same it goes for English language. There are levels, although not as uniquely specific as those in Bahasa Melayu. In English, to speak in higher level of politeness and respect towards a person, involves a certain wordsplay. Structuring. Choice of words (normal daily words actually..just choice).
I would imagine a President would say such sentence like
"I thank you for the pen you gave me" towards another President/Prime Minister. Instead of using an
expression of gratitude (Thanks, Thank You), a verb was used here instead;
Thank. So,
Thank in that sentence is working in its
verb format; not
noun, not
expression.
Example,
"I
thank you for the pen you gave me".
"I
kill you for the pen you gave me".
"I
eat you for the pen you gave me".
"I
cook you for the pen you gave me".
Kill,
Eat and
Cook are
verbs, just like
Thank. Hairulfadly affirmed his understanding that
Thank cannot be used ALONE on its own to say that we appreciate what we got. It has to be
Thanks or
Thank You. If
Thank is to be used, it has to work as a
verb, just like Ainoitu's sample.
Anyway, yes Ainoitu is correct. In regards to being polite and respectful,
"I thank you for the pen..." is classy. Verb, but nice

===== One tiny teeny weeny addition =======
Thank You is an expression of gratitude. It can stand alone. (interchangeable with Thanks)
A said : I will give you a car.
B said :
Thank you.
That
Thank You stands alone. But really, that
Thank You actually evolved from a full verb sentence to an expression. It was
I Thank You. But it evolved to be simply
Thank You.
I thank you.... verb format.
Thank you...... expression format.
English is a Germanic language, meaning its a sub of German language (something like that..

) Funny, Thank alone on its own may not work in English language but it may work successfully in the country of Germany because Thank comes from the word Danke. In German we say "Danke" to simply say Thank You. Though more politely, we say "Danke Schon".
I thank you = Ich danke ihnen.

Lastly, im not a teacher. I've never been a teacher. The closest i was to being a teacher was when i helped a friend who is a teacher at a D&M institution. She was 9 months pregnant... she had contractions and her water broke. Ok too graphic. Sorry.
Ok maybe i was a tutor once. But that was different. So please feel free to come out with your opinion about anything ... grammar or not

Yall dont have to wait for me. Sometimes my comments are more about me trying to kill time and eat brownies...typing stuff... so i could be 'crazy' you know... so you guys better check out some other sources as well!! Dont say i didnt warn you! hihihihi.
