1. Ali was kicked yesterday. <- Is this a correct sentence? Do I need to drop was?

2. Robots were developed yesterday <- Is this correct? Do I need to drop were? MS Word said wrong. Green underline. But when I change developed to develop it's correct (in MS Word).

3. Ali was kicked by Ahmad <- This is true sentence right?

4. He kicked me or He was kicked me? (For past tense?)

If I have any question I'll post here. Keep cool
-HaiBaRa ai-

3. Ali was kicked by Ahmad (yes, it's true sentence)

4. He kicked me (that's right one..)
or u can use : i was kicked by him

i want to explain more..
but i'm not expert to explain in english... blush.gif

First of all, I donno much about grammar..since I'm still a student, still learning and not a native speaker..
But I can help you with some basic things about grammar that I think u really need to know...seeing that you're asking about it..

after a verb to be (vtb) which is : IS/ARE (if it's in a Present Tense sentence) or WAS/WERE (if it's in a Past Tense sentence) we add +ing to VERB that comes..

example:
Ahmad is eating a burger.

is --> eat..+ing = is eating

and as for your another question...just remember this simple rule..

kicked <-----By-----> kicking

ok, thank you. Why the word jeans has 's'? why we can't drop s? like curtains and more. why? if i have 3 jeans, -> 3 jeanss?
-HaiBaRa ai-
erm...jeans?..3 jeanses? (huhu..i'm not sure bout diz) laugh.gif
maybe juz like : bus --> buses
but i think, maybe 3 jeans..coz "jeans" is a type of brand..it's a name of something

other expert people plz help us... blush.gif
Admin2
when i lookup at the dictionary, this verb is a part of plural noun. It can't be change. My teacher said, we must add s for this noun. In malay, we say "berpasang". All "berpasang" must add s. like shoes, curtains, drapes. I'm not sure!...

Anyway,I'll try to guide you with my best

1-true
2-true
3-true
4-He kicked me. The differences between 1) and 2) were Ali in 1) and robots in sentence 2) both were objects.
it means that they "suffer" from the act of "kick" and "develop"

he was kicked me? it doesn't sound right at all.

if you put it like this;

he was kicked by me (it means YOU kicked HIM)
he kicked me (you being KICKED by him)
i kicked him (obvious, you kick him)

Yes i cooled down ... thank you smile.gif
Anyway, sweetie, next time, instead of coming out of nowhere into a topic and say something strayed, try explaining yourself first.
For instance; realise that this topic is solely about Amd Aft asking for help in learning grammar. So, you reply to his call, or you dont; choose either one. But if you want to say something else such as stating your opinion, start with "In my opinion" or "In my humble opinion", or simply "IMHO"/ "IMO". This is to make sure that your intention is understood, especially when your opinion is not in favour of Amd Aft's call for help.

Now that, sweetie, is neither grammar nor vocabulary. It is "class". Santun.
Ok ? smile.gif So let's all do better next time.

====== In regards to Jeans, Shoes & Bus ===========

"Jeans" is a noun that exists only in plural form. There is no "jean", not officially. In Bahasa Malaysia, we say "sepasang seluar". We dont say "satu seluar". In English, we say "a pair of jeans" or "a pair of trousers". We do not say "a jeans" or "a trousers". But if there is more than one jeans or one trousers, 2 maybe, we say "two pairs of jeans" or "two pairs of trousers". Notice that to form plural sentences, the word PAIR is modified, not trousers, not jeans. This is a classic case of an object that physically has a repetition in its design. Do you notice that trousers/jeans have 2 legs ? smile.gif That is why these 2 words exist in plural form straight away.
Another example is glasses (cermin mata). Glass in general is kaca/cermin. For cermin mata, there has to be 2 glasses(kaca). So, cermin mata only exists in plural form. So we call cermin mata glasses. A pair of glasses.

So for all above; trousers, jeans and glasses ... we have to use the article "are" not "is", pronoun "they" not "it" and "them" not "it" and "these" not "this" and "those" not "that".

Where are my trousers ?
They are in the drawer.

Are these your glasses ?
Yes. These are my glasses.

What are those in green colour over there ?
Owh those are a pair of trousers. I just bought them.

Are these freaky-looking jeans yours ?
Oh no no please no! They belong to my grandmother!

But if we are talking about glass to mean cawan or cermin (not cermin mata), the word is simply glass. One glass(cawan) is "a glass". If there is more than one, 2 maybe, then it is "two glasses".

Bus is a word of its own. Just like table or plane or chair. The letter S in bus is not an indication of plurality. Besides, bus does not have the same physical format like trousers, jeans or glasses (2 legs, 2 roundies .. repeated design). So, it is simply bus, like chair or table or plane. So, one bus is "a bus" and if there is more than one, 2 maybe, it is "two buses".

Ok i think i saw a sniper. I better leave smile.gif
Hope i did help a little up there.

~its time to vote cikbedah to be our guru here smile.gif i think she wont mind checking our post for grammar syntax error as well hehe tongue.gif

Amboiii amboiii! smile.gif

Owhh well letss seee ...hmmm i think this one is going to be a long browniechewing kinda typing. So brace yourself smile.gif

First thing's first...the general meaning of THANK.
Thank is a verb (kata kerja) ; to express gratitude.
Example,
I thank Kiswana for her support.
You have to thank the beautiful weather for such a beautiful picnic.
"Cik Bedah, thank Cik Jenab for me please...", says Madonna.

In those cases, Thank is a verb just like the words kill, shoot, call, etc.

Thank is a noun (kata nama) ; an expression of gratitude.
Example,
Many thanks to my fellow colleagues for helping me.
I have a lot of thanks for my parents, they were very supportive.
"My endless thanks for you Cik Bedah...." says Jennifer Lopez.

In those cases, Thank is a noun just like the words cake, icecream or bomb. As a noun, the word Thank can be singular (Thank) or plural (Thanks). But, very very rarely the word Thank is used in its singular form, and as you can see, the sample sentences for noun up there use the plural form of Thank which is Thanks.

========== End Of General Talk ==============

Now, regarding those situations that KeH brought upon us here.

Thanks is a variation of Thank You. Thanks is an informal version of Thank You. Both Thanks and Thank You have one and the same meaning. Thus, they are interchangeable for use, meaning, you can use Thanks or you can use Thank You.. and only these two....with NO OTHER SPELLING !! Thanks or Thank You .. got it ? smile.gif
In school, they call Thanks and Thank You as EXPRESSION. I call them WORDS. Im like...totally dhuhhh!!!

Sample A : Thanks for the meal. / Thanks for the meals.
Both are correct.
Explanation:
As explained up there, the word Thanks used in both sentences here is correct as it is merely another version of Thank You. Remember, Thanks and Thank You are one and the same and they are interchangeable.
The words Meal and Meals are noun. Meal is singular and Meals is plural. Thats all. These two words are about the food and nothing else.

Thanks for the bomb. / Thanks for the bombs.
Thanks for the apple. / Thanks for the apples.

See.... ? So, theres nothing wrong in KeH's Sample A there.

Sample B : Thank for the meals. / Thank for the meal.
Both are wrong.
Explanation:
As explained up there, the word Thank here cannot be used to mean Thank You because the interchangeable expression for Thank You is Thanks, not Thank. Always, its either Thanks or Thank You.
The word Meals and Meal are noun, Meals is plural and Meal is singular. Again, you can thank people for one meal or two meals..theres nothing wrong with that.

QUOTE(KeH @ Nov 14 2007, 05:30 PM)
Let say we want to say it to a person or a group of peoples, which one is correct?

Actually, those two samples are not related to how many people we say Thanks/ThankYou to. This is because, the expression Thanks comes from Thank You... YOU is the pronoun (kata gantinama) for one person AND more than one person. English language has only one word for this which is YOU. YOU is both for singular pronoun AND plural pronoun. So we say Thanks/ThankYou to one person or a group of people..it doesnt matter.
The words Meal and Meals. Again, these two words are about one meal or two/three/four/countless meals...one apple, two/three/four/countless apples. Meal and Meals here are not about how many people were eating. One person can eat one meal or two or more meals. Likewise, a group of people can share one meal or they can have two or more meals.

Sssssooooo...we say..

Thanks KeH, for bringing the table/tables.
Thank you KeH, for bringing the table/tables.
Thanks all, for bringing the table/tables.
Thank you all, for bringing the table/tables.

See ... no matter how many person or people you say your thanks to, and no matter how many table they bring, one table or more tables, you either say Thanks or Thank You.

Lastly... we dont use Thanks during formal situations. We always use Thank You.
"Terima kasih....", kata Perdana Menteri semasa menerima anugerah tersebut.
"Mekasih.........", kata Perdana Menteri semasa menerima anugerah tersebut. (Huhhh???)

So this whole thing boils down to the fact that Geniousboy is correct. I just needed an excuse to hang around this kitchen table and eat lots of chocbrownies. So ... Thanks for the meal.
Hokay....i should be disgustingly annoying to yall right now.

Cik Bedah

IMHO, on "thank" instead of "thank you" is used as spoken(Qulloquiol) only. It is more polite, I think when addressing the elderly, higher status person to use " I thank you for the pen you gave me". But let's wait for Cik Bedah's comments.
abedahmatusin
Hey yall smile.gif

Yes Hairulfadly. You are correct. You can say Thanks or Thank You to a singular(person) or plural(persons/people). smile.gif

QUOTE(Ainoitu @ Nov 16 2007, 02:12 AM)
IMHO, on "thank" instead of "thank you" is used as spoken(Qulloquiol) only. It is more polite, I think when addressing the elderly, higher status person to use " I thank you for the pen you gave me".

Ainoitu is correct. When addressing elderly ones or those of higher status, you could use "I thank you for the pen you gave me". What happens here is; you are addressing someone of a different status/age, so you are conversing to that person in his respect, respectfully and politely.
The same it goes for English language. There are levels, although not as uniquely specific as those in Bahasa Melayu. In English, to speak in higher level of politeness and respect towards a person, involves a certain wordsplay. Structuring. Choice of words (normal daily words actually..just choice).
I would imagine a President would say such sentence like "I thank you for the pen you gave me" towards another President/Prime Minister. Instead of using an expression of gratitude (Thanks, Thank You), a verb was used here instead; Thank. So, Thank in that sentence is working in its verb format; not noun, not expression.

Example,
"I thank you for the pen you gave me".
"I kill you for the pen you gave me".
"I eat you for the pen you gave me".
"I cook you for the pen you gave me".

Kill, Eat and Cook are verbs, just like Thank. Hairulfadly affirmed his understanding that Thank cannot be used ALONE on its own to say that we appreciate what we got. It has to be Thanks or Thank You. If Thank is to be used, it has to work as a verb, just like Ainoitu's sample.
Anyway, yes Ainoitu is correct. In regards to being polite and respectful, "I thank you for the pen..." is classy. Verb, but nice smile.gif

===== One tiny teeny weeny addition =======

Thank You is an expression of gratitude. It can stand alone. (interchangeable with Thanks)
A said : I will give you a car.
B said : Thank you.

That Thank You stands alone. But really, that Thank You actually evolved from a full verb sentence to an expression. It was I Thank You. But it evolved to be simply Thank You.

I thank you.... verb format.
Thank you...... expression format.

English is a Germanic language, meaning its a sub of German language (something like that..smile.gif) Funny, Thank alone on its own may not work in English language but it may work successfully in the country of Germany because Thank comes from the word Danke. In German we say "Danke" to simply say Thank You. Though more politely, we say "Danke Schon".

I thank you = Ich danke ihnen.

===== End of tiny teeny weeny addition ====

Lastly, im not a teacher. I've never been a teacher. The closest i was to being a teacher was when i helped a friend who is a teacher at a D&M institution. She was 9 months pregnant... she had contractions and her water broke. Ok too graphic. Sorry.
Ok maybe i was a tutor once. But that was different. So please feel free to come out with your opinion about anything ... grammar or not smile.gif Yall dont have to wait for me. Sometimes my comments are more about me trying to kill time and eat brownies...typing stuff... so i could be 'crazy' you know... so you guys better check out some other sources as well!! When I started speaking English, I did not care about grammer or pronunciation. I was a total broken pot. Then, was to get message across to my friends and to undestand what they were saying to me. Of course they laughed and poked fun for my spoken English. I believe you have to be brave and have thick skin if they laugh at you. Make sure they correct you, if they are sincere and that they are your friends. I tried it that way, but I was lucky in the sense that I had different races as friends, I had to speak English. So tell your friends to correct your mistakes and try to speak with confidence. Keep it simple. A teacher in English told me with a minimum of 80 words as vocabulary we can speak correct English, but every sentence must have a subject and predicate. That would be sufficient to talk anything.
I could correct some of sentences you asked, but I may not be able to give reasons for them and you wont be enlightened, and that is bad. It was so loooong ago since I left school that I might have forgotten my pronouns, adverbs, adjectives and their clauses and phrases. I am very sorry.

Since no takers for the above I will try my best to HELP with the above( temporary, until someone else will REALLY qualified do the real job) problem.
You are not allow to copy from your friend's answers =You are not allowed to copy the answers from your friends.(Better= You are not allowed to copy the answer/s). Allowed is used even when "is not" is used.(This is what I meant It's difficult for me to explain) Eg. You/They/All are welcomed. You/They/All are not welcomed.

What different[are the differences, you must have a verb in a sentence] between -ing in 'washing machine' with 'he is washing'? or wr'iting book' and 'is writing'
washing, wr'iting are used as adjectives, describing the articles, machine and book.

He is washing. Here (I am not sure) "WASHING" is used as an adverb(??)
Another use of "washing" as a gerund(adverbial noun), = Today's washing is completely dry.

He kicked me - simple present tense

You must know the difference between active and passive sentence coz the structure and the Verb form is totally different.

eg for Simple Past tenses (for action that happened in the past with Time indicator / Perbuatan bermula dan tamat di masa lepas dengan penunjuk masa)

1. Abu kicked Ali just now. (active form as the 'doer' of the action (kicked) ie Abu is the subject of the sentence) / bentuk Aktif kerana pembuat perbuatan merupakan subjek dalam ayat.

2. Ali was kicked by Abu just now (Passive form as the 'receiver of the action' ie Ali is now the subject of the sentence) / bentuk Pasif kerana penerima perbuatan merupakan subjek dalam ayat.

Kedua2 ayat mempunyai maksud yang sama cuma Subjek atau Pelakon Utama dalam ayat telah berubah.

For Simple Past:-

1. Active sentence - Subject + Verb in Simple Past form

2. Passive sentence - Subject + was/were + Verb in Past particple

Read articles on English at my site at http://knowledgecentre.wordpress.com

4(i) He kicked me = Dia telah menendang saya. - Ayat Aktif dalam tenses Simple Past

4(ii) He was kicked by me. =Dia telah ditendang oleh saya. - Ayat Pasif dalam tenses Simple Past

So ada dua makna yang berbeza.

Boleh jugak tukar ke

4(i) I was kicked by him. = Saya telah ditendang oleh dia. - Ayat Pasif dalam tenses Simple Past

4(ii) I kicked him. =Saya telah menendang dia. - Ayat Aktif dalam tenses Simple Past

Okay there goes my question should I put ed after the "explain" word?

Anep03

I'll try this one. Don't know if it's right or not. If not please correct me

Recently, I have been scolded by my mother because I was coming home late. Sometimes soon, / Soon, I'm going to Sarawak for a holiday. / I'm going to have a holiday in Sarawak.

Dose this make sense??
p/s: don't laugh at me too.

Ni version saya pulak

Recently, I was scolded by my mother (Simple Past dalam bentuk Passive) because I came (Simple Past) home late. Soon, I'm going (Present progressive digunakan untuk perbuatan yg akan berlaku dalam masa terdekat) to Sarawak for my vacation.

Simple Present Tense digunakan untuk perkara yang sering berlaku
formula : Pelaku(Subject) + Kata kerja(Verb Infinitive)

I,You, They,We : kata kerja(verb) tiada tambahan
He,She, It : kata kerja(verb) mesti tambah 's, es or ies'

cth:
I go to school everyday.
He goes to school everyday.

They play football every evening.
She plays valley ball every evening.

Simple Past Tense digunakan untuk menunjukkan perkara yang sudah berlaku & ada tempoh masanya
formula : Pelaku(Subject) + Verb(Past Tense)

cth:
I played football this morning.
Hafiz invited me to his birthday party last week.
We went to Sipadan last month.

correct me if i wrong hee.. wink.gif
