My English is not so well. But i am not an anti English medium. But my question is, why when its comes to English matter, we ashame and afraid to do wrong thing - spelling / pronounces? Even Putra.Com strictly warned it user that every one MUST use proper English - rojak is unacceptable.

Wo, wo, wo... bukan main bertegas lagi when it comes to English matter. But when it comes to Bahasa Melayu, Putra.Com was using bahasa Melayu in MORE THAN ROJAK manner. Perhaps ROJAK MASAM. And the Bahasa Melayu language from the jungle was using in this website when their user communicates in Bahasa Melayu.

No wonder English became international languange, but your bahasa (Bahasa Melayu) still as bahasa kampung! it because of you - Malay attitude!

I know Putra.com English Forum was dedicated to improve English. But if Putra.Com ada kesedaran, it can impose same special rules to their users in using this website in Bahasa Melayu.

Wo...wo...wo, kita sudah 50 tahun merdeka all my brothers! Tetapi merdekakah kita dengan this kind of mind atitude? Answer me!

The answer is simple:

We are free to use the Net as we like and be as anonymous as we'd want.

Thank you.

hahaha.. i admit it, i'm the one of them. its not just happened like that, because when i started to use internet around 1997(15 years old), there is not much i can do with bahasa. most of the websites, chat rooms, messageboards were in english. so, i had to embrace myself to become comfortable in English.
now, i'm 10 years older, its hard to embrace again to use proper malay. but, if i can use kelantanese dialect (mother tongue) here, my post could be 100% in kelantanese malay.

As for me .. i think we improve a lot better than 90ies.. and will continue improving. As long as DBP exist, BM will be up 2 date along with other language in the world.

I need to improve my English to fulfill the demand of current job markets nowaday, so english room like this is very improtant. That doesnt mean i neglect my bahasa, i still using them. English is so important nowaday, especially in computing and technology majors.Sorry, not so much people overseas can understand bahasa (i havent met any non malaysian that can speak malay), as it is an exotic language, to communicate with them i simply have to learn english. Plus, most knowledge spreaded around the world is in english. You want DBP to translate it into bahasa first before i can study it?HUH, that will takes time and i am sure after the translation process done, people overseas already far ahead manipulating/exploiting that technology....

Ask DBP to translate microsoft.com, astalavista.com first
nudinzek

all did not understand what i mean. actually i myself agree that english is very important, especially if we want to success at international level. what i am trying to highlight is we never respect our bahasa by using rojak and all the language for the jungle when we talk / write in bahasa melayu. but when we talk / write in english, we particularly are very carefull to avoid any mistake. its mean we more respect other people language other than ourself (bahasa melayu). its mean we don't have self respect to ourself. bangsa merdeka tak gitu!

when i asked you all to respect bahasa sendiri (bahasa melayu) its doesn't mean i myself did not recognise english language, especially to communicates at international level. that why i myself join this english forum to improve my english. but i want you all treat your own language - bahasa melayu - as how you treat english language. jangan jadikan bahasa melayu ibunda kamu itu HAPRAK sangat sampai bahasa jakun pun lebih baik daripasda bahasa melayu kamu. faham betul-betullah kawan!
versanner
I see what you mean, but 5 people cant understand you at first, you should clarify it clearly in the first post of the topic, not chanting overwelmingly. That's why people cant understand it at first...

But honestly speaking, sometimes i cannot understand what forumer typed (in malay) as it is so 'rojak'

Imho the individual is free, to choose and use and write in the proper form. Like this discussion forum (be it Bahasa or English) for instance because it is an informal media. The most important thing is that you follow the general rule - don't flame the forum community. If the forum community accepts your language usage, then it's okay, isnt' it? But if you instead, cannot accept their language or style, and the way they are using it, then that is not their problem at all, right?

So deal with it.

But please don't blame and single out Bahasa Melayu, that is not fair at all. I really am tired of hearing everything bad, is related to Melayu because it is not true and biased. Just remember that habits can be broken, if you choose to break it. You can put capital letters where it should be capitalized, if you choose to put it.

Whatever your choice is, it's your decision, you decide. The freedom of choice is there.

up to person... my opinion...

we cannot juz folow what is before and we must do something different to go advance as aphorism nabi :
"jika kita nak menawan sesebuah negara kita hendaklah mempelajari bahasanya dahulu"
(if we want defeat some person or other country we must study their language first)

but..... we can't forget our bahasa b'coz it call our darjat!!!!!!!!! as aphorism hang tuah :
"tak kan melayu hilang didunia"
(melay can't destroy)

so, the conclusion we must study all about language or something that call ilmiah as arab phorism :
"tolaba ilma walau siin"
(study all about knowledge until china country)

so, juz think and conclusion is ............

I have never feel ashame / afraid / shy to speak / write in English, despite being not-so-good at it. I honestly have no problem knowing my spelling being incorrect, that's what Dictionary for.

Dude are you blind or prefer to be ignorant? Didn't you notice what is written at the main page?

"Special Forum to improve English language skills.", this could be the main reason as to why they want us to use proper English. So that we will be able to improve ourselves. Till when do you want to stick using Manglish?

Why aren't they being strict on Bahasa Melayu? For God sake, most of the users here are Malay. Doesn't matter whatever words or how it spells I'm pretty sure users here are able to tell what is(are) the actual word(s) or meaning.

English became an International language is not because Putera.com have strict rules on its usage. It have been an international language since, God knows when.

Oh imposing a special rules to the usage of Bahasa Melayu? Do you seriously believe that will work? Come on now, be realistic. In your daily conversation how often do you use proper Bahasa Melayu?

50 years of independence have nothing to do with the language. But rather the effort being put into getting it. So are you implying that those who uses English more than Bahasa Melayu in their daily activities / conversation are still being colonized? The way I see it, that's the kind of thinking that required amendment. cool.gif

Using rojak doesnt mean we dont respect the language, it is more like "liberation of mind", aint sticking/bound to any rules, so that everybody will feel 'easy-going' here, not like any formal conversation held in meeting rooms/classes.....i am 100% agree with mr SHiDi

ps: even japanese use so much 'rojak' in their language....everybody doing it

Bahasa Melayu/Malaysia is lack of words, so we have to adapt many words from other language. Even English also lack of words and they 'stole' many words from Latin, etc.

I will try to speak in proper Malay if *they* eliminate the words like bajet that perfectly can be used as 'belanjawan', minda (fikiran/pemikiran), informasi (maklumat), etc etc.

However, we cant replace these words because there is no equivalent words. So we have to adapt it like
Book Buku
Lamp Lampu
Ball Bola
Tank Tangki
School Sekolah ("Schoolah") or 'Madrasah'

No offence my friend, but please stop saying " My english is bad". i think you keep repeating that in almost all of your posts. All of us here make mistakes, and our english isnt good either. We keep learning. If you keep saying your english is bad so many times, i afraid it will becomes like 'doa', and i am sure you dont want that to happen.

ROJAK MASAM? So you hate it when forummers speaks broken Malay, how bout english?

The key to understanding other language is READ, (IQRA) the first word of Quran.

I have to admit, I am turned down having to entertain who speaks badly in any language. So I'll tell you what you should do to improve your english dramatically.

1. Watch English movie and follow what they say even if you dont understand a word.
2. Read properly written English articles e.g. FORBES, TIMES, NST, The STAR. and read out LOUD! do it 30 mins a day.
3. Buy Standard 4 to 6 Exercise book. DO IT!
4. Buy "Mind Your Language" DVD. Watch it and understand the jokes.
5. Watch only English comedy. Malay comedians are rather stupid and we get that often from our friends.

Misconception
1. English is not a direct translation of BM. Thats why Indian and Chinese have their own style of speaking English
2. You're not good at speaking english, broken for you is acceptable as long as its 'speakable'. WRONG. Do you like someone who speaks Malay tunggang terbalik? Likewise.
3. I am shy to practice or to attend english class. Then forget about english, pray hard so that everything in Malaysia will be translated to Malay like in Germany. Also stay in your tempurung, don't progress.
4. I want to learn but dont know where to start. Follow the above guidelines. 2-3 months, you should have a rough understanding.
5. No point in learning new vocab if you dont know how to use to proper grammar or at least acceptable.
6. Having a conversation with someone at your level will improve your english. Nope. It'll worsen. If you dont have a partner, speak to yourself.

Me?
Judge me on what I've wrote. I still have a huge space to fill in the gap.

BM was derived mostly from Arabic.

Lack of words or lack of vocab? Malay is rich in vocabs, get the green dictionary, Kamus Dewan I believe. Go through. You'll realize you have only used 65% (more of less) of Malay in your lifetime. Only in ancient time, we need to borrow vocab from others. On second thought, others also borrowed from others. So it evens out.

There was a time where everyone speaks Malay. It was during Sultan Mansur ruling. Malay was considered as the official trading language. China, India, Arab and the rest of the world learned Malay because it was the key to wealth. Today, its english and mandarin.

I was in London, when I bad mouthed a Mat Salleh on the bus about his tattoo. He came to me and said, "cakap baik-baik, orang putih pon belajar bahasa melayu di 'high school' ". Lesson learned. Do not assume anyone other than Malay, Chinese and Indian cannot speak Malay.

Since i was 8 years old, I rarely reading out LOUD (in english or malay) because the reading process would become really slow and I am naturally not a good speaker. Now, I really regret it.

Bahasa Melayu is a wonderful language. If I'm not mistaken it has been declared as the 'second most spoken language' in the world, some times ago. Of course, English is the first one and always. Hmm.. looks like there is no other language can 'beat' English. Maybe, some other day Mandarin will take English's place - the most spoken language in the world. Wait and see...

sorry if my english bad,but in my opinion, the reason why our language become kampung and not an international is becoz our own attituden that shame to speak malay when other malaysian speak in english...kita taknak menegakkan bahasa kita sendiri... lets see other race like chiness n indian, they can speak english well n the own language too... why? the most people that i respect is japanesse, they are quite stupid in english but yet they still can achive excel in the world...why?

Err, I don't think it's because I'm a malaysian (well, maybe partly)..but the main reason because I'm a Malay, and I'm comfortable with my language. tongue.gif
In my opinion:

English: Important for our education, important for our career (well, depends what's your career), and important when we need to understand something that requires understanding in English =)
Malay: It's my language. Surely I don't want to talk about girls or footballs with my Malay mate in English Language!
Kill3rX
the answer is very simple.. In today's world, English is very demanding. In education and in business, English is the main medium. If not, you'd end up being like the Indonesians. They have to use translators in every way. Some of the lucky (educated/rich) ones are able to go to English medium school. The less fortunate however, is less fortunate.

You still have to preserve the Malay language. They are just as important as it is with the English language. Studying in an international school is very interesting. There's all sorts of languages you can hear every single day. Trust me, if there's a new Malay kid in school, its like getting a new best friend. It is a very fun experience and I'm really glad I experienced it

Of course we all have to use all words in english here because that was the rule. If there are still anybody want to use rojak's english, there are other sections (in this forum). This section was created for those who wants to improve, polish and etc their english.

Some other rule also can be defined if there is a demand to speak Bahasa Melayu or Bahasa Malaysia in proper way. But then, can the users really follow/abide the rules?

ok...if u say that if we not good we will be like indonesian, but how about japanese? as i know...the conversation language that they use in education is japan, if u want to study there,u must learn their language,(as i know,if i'm wrong...forgive me then),and business..their english is poorbut how many percent of things that we use daily or thing/brand in the world is not from japan?especialy vehicle....

as u can see,all manual of thing that we buy,all of them have japan language..why malay language is not include in any manual of goods?

Do Malaysians have good quality as Japanese? I dont think so....Japanese can 'live' by themselves, simply means if they close their door from outside world, they still can live. That is why english is not important to them. Malaysian? If we detach from the outside world, we die. That is why english is so important to malaysian. Dont compare Malaysia to Japan, Malaysia is nowhere around Japan's league.
{alongxp}
and that is our prob..we are not try to improve our quality of life, lets bact to history, hiroshima was bombed by british(if im not mistake),what does they have after that? colud you imagine how they rebuild their country after that? what they have achive now?
versanner
It was american that bombed Japan. They started from scratch, now they become world's number two country. Relate to our problems, another thing is, malaysian government always playing with the rakyats mind, that we are so great in lots of things, where in fact that we are not. So, the Malaysians always feel 'syok sendiri' and become the laugh-stocks.
geniousboy
have you read yesterday and today's paper?umno people wanted to switch back teaching science and maths in malay..i don't think that would be good..we have to realise that this program has just started couple years ago, so of course we would not be able to see any improvement or good results. just wait for another few years before we could see something. please, i do think this is one good way to improve english among students especially the malays. if we say that students cannot understand, cannot cope with english language, then it's government job to make sure everyone put an effort to improve their english proficiency. even i think every UMNO disctrict representative should give intensive english classes specifically to rural students...spend money to provide them with knowledge rather than wasting money giving text books to ALL STUDENTS for FREE!!!that's a big waste man..imagine even for students whose parents earn some 10k for a month..yet they still got text books for free..argh!!such a waste!!lets say 1 book cost rm10, each student will need at more or less 10 books, so it's already 100 bucks for 1 student. imagine how much money the government are wasting just for text books. idiots. (sorry, a lil bit out of topic). okay, what i'm trying to stress here is that, we should stick to teach science and maths in english. despite the importance to preserve malay language as national language, we should take note of how crucial for students to master english. we shouldn't compare ourselves with japan or china questioning why they can move forward even though they do not really using english? it's simple, countries like japan have already established their economy, politics and everything long long way before us. they're already a developed country, they can produce their own technology and people are using their technology. but malaysia is still a developing country. we need to take and apply technology from foreign sources which are mostly in english. that is why english is very important to us. so guys,

Yes, i totally agree with you, and that is exactly what i mean before. i think the switch-language thing is because of the becoming general elections. as we know, many people especially the ones that live in remote areas have been poisoned by some parties. The propaganda is, that parties excuse government that they try to implement British ways and using english in school can be seen as eliminating malay customs and honor. That is the main problems of Malaysia: opposition parties are not intellect/proffesional. Not like opposition parties in developed nations (eg spore/japan/australia), eventhough they have different ideologies with the ruling parties, their aims and objectives are same:develope the nations and its citizens. For malaysian case, the opposition parties ask them to riot on the street. Wrong! Whatever the reason is, that still wrong. remember malay wise words: matlamat tidak menghalalkan cara. For villagers, they can be easily been fooled by this sentiments. I think, Umno realize this and that is why they switching back: simply to lure people to vote for them in the ballots. But i havent gone through about this matter, maybe after doing some reading i can figure out the real reason for this switching. I totally agree in using english at school, even i can see a very good improvements of students' english (those who are commited to study)

As for Japanese, their ways of living are different from us. What i can figure now, there are now changing and reform their culture to be somewhat called very-tough-of-competition culture. they simply changing their lifestyle to be very very hardworking and tough, no matter who you are, even a girl idol needs to be very tough...
our ways of living are based on relax(lazy?), complaining, and blame everybody for our own failure.see the differences.....

yes, this is harsh, but that is the reality...dont be mat jenin.

I think what he is right.....

We do use proper English language if wanna write in English, but when it comes to B.Melayu we write, pronouce or even spell the words carefully and afraid if we r doing something wrong with the language itself..

Heres my suggestion,
Of course we cant totally force people to use proper language just like that
For starter I think the admin should make a special 'Sudut Bahasa Melayu' where we can discuss our own national language there.

Well it just a suggestion since, its 50 years of our national independance, this would be a great present for all National users here

When I was in school years ago, I was confused. We had Bahasa Melayu and Bahasa Malaysia. English was the teaching medium in my school then. There were words which was correct to use in Bahasa Melayu but would be wrong in Bahasa Malaysia and vice versa.
Now, it seems is quite liberal and would be correct to use most of the words for both, IMO. But lately, I'm confused but due to policy makers( I may step on manny toes here). It' because, they kept changing from B. Malaysia to Bahasa Melayu to and fro.
I really wish that for the National Language we have B. Malaysia and that's that(wishful thinking).

The changing Bahasa Malaysia to Bahasa Melayu thing - Does it matter? for me, this 'so called dispute' has no sense at all.
