The Greater Good prevail over Evil

The forces of the greater good of the Tau Empire had finally prevailed over the evil Necron at the Dawn of War Dark Crusade Mini Tournament held at Eclipse Multimedia cyber café in Old Klang Road last weekend.

Players competed in a double elimination bracket, giving more players an equal opportunity to do battle once more against others in the losers’ bracket. This was a different format played from the usual best 2 out of 3 matches, single elimination knockout played in previous tournaments.

A new victory condition was also introduced, Take and Hold to prevent the Necron’s from camping in their base. This was to draw them out in the open as the previous tournament in Cybertime proved the Necrons were impossible to defeat for other races as they reached higher tech levels. This was to give players a better standing against Necron opponents.

In the first preliminary round, many of the veteran players especially from the LYNK clan moved up to the winner’s bracket, practically dominating the entire bracket. Meanwhile, many newcomers such as Cuarto Espada, FatalAngel and piccOLO fell to the loser’s bracket but in managed to move up a bracket higher by beating Sky, Leonhart and CamperS.W.A.T from the same bracket respectively.

In the 2nd round of the winner’s bracket, many of the LYNK clan members had to battle with each other resulting in many retiring to the loser’s brack while the top 4 winners of the winner’s bracket were Roti, Broken Finger, G.Spec and Rotten Prok.

The loser’s bracket continued with the fallouts from the 2nd round of the winner’s bracket where Cuarto Espada was faced off with Hunt, SoulCraver head on Osiris, piccOLO against Chicken_Feet and Fatal Angel versus DarkFyre. Hunt, Osiris and DarkFyre moved up a notch but Chicken_Feet could not beat piccOLO. The new Take & Hold victory condition prevented Chicken_Feet from camping in his base, giving piccOLO a chance to win.

piccOLO went on be paired with DarkFyre, but DarkFyre’s Space Marine was a more worthy adversary than piccOLO’s Tau forces. Osiris gave up by letting Hunt have a walkover after negotiating with one another as they both secured a place in the top 8.

Continuing in the loser’s bracket, DarkFyre then met with G.Spec, who lost to Rotten Prok from the winner’s bracket. DarkFyre’s mighty Space Marines, no matter how noble they were to the Emperor, could not hold up to the Necron death march. Hunt had to compete with Roti who lost to Broken Finger a.k.a. Scrubie (who incidentally has a broken finger) from the winner’s bracket. Roti had very little luck against Broken Finger and had lost to him twice in the past tournaments.

Roti later went on to mow over Hunt’s Ork with ease after dropping to the loser’s bracket and continued on to do battle G.Spec. Taking revenge from his earlier defeat on fellow clanmate, Roti virtually destroying G.Spec’s Necron army without any pieces for them to resurrect.

The battle for third place was between Rotten Prok and Roti. Rotten Prok earlier lost out to Broken Finger in the winner’s bracket and by defeating Roti landed himself in 3rd place. Rotten Prok went ahead to fight Broken Finger one more time but in a double elimination, the player from the loser’s bracket needed to beat his opponent with at least 2 wins.

With Take & Hold, the winner from the Autumn Breeze Tournament Rotten Prok chose the Necrons to play against Broken Finger but the evil Necrons ultimately cannot stand out in a Take & Hold game. The greater good of the Tau has finally defeated evil after coming in 3rd place for the past few tournaments.
