Blue Coat Systems extend Kagoshima University's WAN

Print    Email

Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BCSI), the leader in secure content and application delivery, announced that Kagoshima University, through its Computing and Communications Center, has selected Blue Coat® SG™ appliances to accelerate the delivery of Internet applications and content across its global Wide Area Network (WAN) from its central Koorimoto campus to residents using wireless Internet access on Iojima Island.

The Community Broadband Project—Toward the Elimination of Broadband Zero Areas—brings usable Internet access to the island residents. In particular, residents now have access to streaming video, which now runs efficiently and with a high quality experience for users. The Blue Coat appliances have optimized the delivery of streaming video nearly 4,300 times.

The SG appliances have also reduced overall bandwidth consumption by 50 percent, unburdening a routinely saturated WAN. The implementation was done by the Computing and Communications Center of Kagoshima University with expert support from Fujitsu Kagoshima Infonet Limited and NTT West.  It was also partially funded by the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications of Japan.

“Blue Coat has helped us achieve more with less,” said Professor Masuya of the Computing and Communications Center, Kagoshima University. “With Blue Coat, we can deliver video to our remote users, significantly speed content and applications, and decrease overall bandwidth consumption, leaving room for future growth or additional applications.”

Based on the success of its first deployment, Kagoshima University is considering deployment of Blue Coat SG appliances at other remote locations.

“Blue Coat SG appliances can control and accelerate the full range of applications, ranging from email and Web applications to streaming video while also reducing bandwidth consumption,” said Matt Young, vice president, Asia Pacific, Blue Coat Systems. “We are pleased to help provide such a dramatic difference to Kagoshima University.”
